DIY frilly tankini and flower flipflops

DIY bikini

Bonjour from France !

Today is the first day of my DIY swimsuit series – I’ve been teasing you for weeks now ! This project came about after a swimsuit customising workshop I did in Paris with a brand called La Mercerie Chic. This online haberdashery has so many incredible supplies and so many bits for customising swimsuits ! I had never seen anything like it ! So of course I had to show you by the means of another challenge… Over the next couple of weeks I have 5 DIY swimsuit projects to show you, projects I am sure you can recreate at home !

The first swimsuit of the series is a customised tankini, but actually only the bottoms have been DIYed. I added a frilly skirt all around them and left the top as it was. The technique used in this project is very similar to the one in tee-shirt #1 of my 30 days 30 tee-shirts challenge – coincidence, I think not ! I also customised a pair of flipflops to go with the tankini, with shoe clips – a supply I love to use but have never used on Clones ‘n’ Clowns before. See below for details.DIY swimsuitDIY swimsuitTo add a colourful frill to your bikini/tankini bottoms, YOU WILL NEED :

- One pair of basic swimsuit bottoms

- 3-4m of wide red ycra rib

- 3-4m of orange lyrcra rib

- A needle and elastic thread

Step 1 : Place one strip of lycra over the other. Thread your needle with 1,5m of elastic thread and stitch the lycra in place.DIY swimsuitStep 2 : Continue to sew along the edge of the lycra, gathering the fabric as you go. Make sure your elastic thread isn’t stretched inside your frill. You want to be able to pull on your thread to pull on your bikini bottoms !DIY swimsuitStep 3 : Stop when your frill is long enough to go around the waist of your bottoms. Do a good couple of stitches to finish off and cut off any excess fabric.DIY swimsuitStep 4 : Using elastic, stitch the frill onto the bottoms. Again, make sure your elastic is loose enough for the bottoms to be stretched. Try to make the stitches as invisible as possible by only going through the first layer of the frill or by stitching tiny stitches.DIY swimsuitDIY swimsuitYou can wear these bottoms with a basic tankini top or even customise a matching bikini top for extra fun !

To make flowery shoe clips, YOU WILL NEED :

- Two lycra flowers

- Two shoe clips

- Strong glueDIY shoe clipsTo assemble your clips, simply glue the back of the flowers to the clips and leave to dry !DIY shoe clipsShoe clips are great because you can make loads and easily customise your shoes to match your clothes or mood…DIY flipflopsWhat do you think ?! Cute, right ?!

I hope you like it ! Stay tuned for the next 4 swimsuits – my favourite is yet to come… ;-)
