This weekend I’ll be… #1

This weekend, I’m going to let go… I feel like I’m constantly running all over the place, always late and ahead of myself at the same time, I have an endless to do list and I swear every time I cross something off it, it retaliates ! I don’t really end up with enough “me” time… Even last week in France, I worked every morning and if I’m honest with myself, I realise my brain was in “work mode” most of the time. In fact, I haven’t really stopped for… A very long time. And because I’m not a very organised person (understatement), things end up piling on top of my head and stressing me out. So I think it’s time to say STOP ! Well, for a few days… When you’re looking for a break, you generally have too choices : calm or crazy. Because it’s raining outdoors and I’m pretty tired, this time I’m going for calm. I feel like snuggling up on the sofa, reading, watching, SLEEPING ! And simply catching up with myself. So here are some of the things I’m going to be doing this week-end : 1 – Tidying my room (yep, that’s right !) I say this more often than I do it. But this time I mean it because you really don’t sleep as well in an disorganised room, have you noticed ? So the first thing I’m going to do tonight is have a good tidy and clean, set things straight before the real weekend kicks in. This is my inspiration picture when I tidy up my clothes – it looks so cute it keeps me motivated ! Source  2 – Having a good old pamper I really want to make an almond face scrub and a yogurt face mask… I haven’t “cooked” myself pretty in a long time and my skin needs a bit of a polish. In fact we haven’t had DIY beauty on here for even longer – maybe if you’re good I’ll share my recipes with you next week 😉 I also want to paint my nails, the real way ! As in, paint on a bottom coat, colour and a top coat – so that it doesn’t keep chipping so quickly ! A little birdie told me my new “Playa del Platinum” by Essie is hoping to join in. (By the way, I can’t believe how cheap Essie nail polish is in $’s !! Can you believe we pay approx. 3 times the price in Europe ?!!) 3 – Watching a GOOD movie (any ideas ?!) This is where you come in… Who has a good suggestion ?! I get so into “good” movies that the idea of watching one I won’t enjoy haunts me… I hate movie-disappointment ! I don’t know if I’m looking for a rom-com or something with a bit more to it, but I do know I don’t like guns, so keep them out of it ! Anything else emotionally engaging you can think of, let me know ! (Oh, and if you can squeeze a six pack in there I’d be grateful… just saying 😉 4 – Walking around London I’m just not bored with this place yet ! There are still so many places I need to see ! This city is MASSIVE ! I know I’ll be tempted to check out mid-season sales, but NO. Walking down Oxford Street would just not fit in with my “relaxing weekend” theme. Instead, I think I’ll check out a quiet park somewhere or have a stroll along the canal… I need a top up on natural energy ! 5 – Having fun with friends Because even without going out partying, having time with friends is such an important life-balancing element. There are a few things going on, including a promising BBQ on Sunday (we’re expecting 25° – yippee). Sounds good, and that means I’ll get to try these marinated lamb chops I’ve been gawking over recently. Cooking is always my best chill-pill… And I think a grilled veggie salad would go well with that, too ! Source So there you have it, my plans for this weekend. What about you ? Will you join me on my quest of tranquillity ? Or are you planning to shake your booty faster than Shakira ?  (I don’t care how outdated Sharkira is, she’s my booty shakin’ reference) xx from a more relaxed state of mind Aimee

These DIY watermelon shorts by Boat People are AMAZING. I don’t know if I had liked a DIY like this in a long time… I think I’m going to have to make a pair this weekend, just like these, no personal touch, I want THESE ! Or maybe I could make a dress ? Nah, I don’t know if it would be as cute… These are DIY-perfect. LOOOOOOVE xx Aimee

Rubik’s cube nibbles and treats

Have you ever managed to resolve the mystery of a Rubik’s cube ? I never got that thing ! But I’ve always liked the design… Which is why I just had to try these ! I really want to share more food presenation ideas on here… I’m getting more and more into food photography (although I have a very, VERY long way to go, it’s so technical !) and so food presentation is something I read about and think about a lot. I might as wall share the inspiration ! This nibbles display is so simple to put together, all you have to do is chop your ingredients into small cubes of the same size and pile them up ! I made sure none of my ingredients were repeated which is always the easiest part of a Rubik’s cube, right ?! As you can see, mine is made up of cucumber, tomato and mozzarella cheese which I sometimes rolled in black pepper. You could also use other cheeses, melon, bread, sausage… What’s nice is that your guests can either pick up one cube or more, depending on their tastes and hunger !  My dessert Rubik’s cube is simply made up of strawberries and chocolate/vanilla cake. I whipped a dollop of fresh cream on top too, for extra yum ! You could use kiwi, melon, citrus fruit or dragon fruit instead of the strawberries – or you could even try making jelly cubes too for a trifle effect ?! I also thought it might be nice to dip the sponge in ruhm, but then maybe the cake would fall apart ? I’ll have to try it ! So – hungry, anyone ?! Have a lovely evening fellow kitchen geeks ! xx Aimee

Shourouk is forever an inspiration for DIY fanatics like ourselves… And this new piece is no different. In fact, I’d say it’s even more inspiring – you’d get to use glitter AND colourful rhinestones ! I just want to sit right down now and give it a go… Unfortunately I have to get to work ! Have a wonderful glittery day ! xx Aimee

Inspiration of the day 26-6-2013

We’ve had a few days without an “inspiration of the day” post, but don’t think I haven’t been inspired ! Quite the contrary, I’ve been travelling through places overflowing with inspiration ! Especially Paris… Where my brother lives. He inspired me the most recently. There’s just something so uplifting about seeing someone reach for his dreams – and make it. I came across this pic* this morning and couldn’t not think of him. If you don’t believe in your dreams, you’ll never make them come true. However, if you wake up each morning believing your dreams are you reality, one day they will be. Sooner than you may think. So don’t forget where you come from, but NEVER forget where you’re going. And make sure it’s the most amazing place you can think of. xx Aimee *Unknown source, please let me know if you know it.

Take a look at St Pancras International

When people ask me where my favourite places in London are, I never really know what to answer… I have already shown you a few places I love (see here, here, here and here), but there are just so many more ! I will attempt to show you more over the months to come – and here is a place I adore right now. These photos were taken ten days ago, on our way to France.     St Pancras is one of the first places I ever saw in London. When I lived in the UK as a young girl, I moved around the North and West of England and never really went to London (or not as far as I can remember, at least). My first trip there was in fact during my first year living in France – a class trip to visit a few museums and famous spots. St Pancras is where the Eurostar leads, straight from the heart of Paris. It was weird being back in England with a French group, I didn’t know where I belonged ! Having been back here for a year and half, I still travel back to Paris every few weeks for work, friends and family. I love that place… And the excitement grows from the second I set foot in St Pancras International train station…  For those of you who have been following me for a year or so, you may remember me saying about my love for train stations… Train stations make me happy 🙂 I love seeing people waiting to meet their loved ones and even emotional departures make me smile with affection. I find travelling by train so relaxing and stations have such amazing features like huge clocks, tic-tacing boards, beautiful floors and high ceilings… And people, each with their own story, rushing around everywhere, threatened by their own watches, impatient to get to where they’re going… Wherever that may be… For whatever reason they may have… St Pancras is by far one of the most incredible stations I have ever seen. Some parts of it are literally breath-taking. It’s like a mini-museum, or a gigantic cabinet of curiosities. There are things to see all over the place, if you only take time to look.  Pianos are available for people to play at all times, meaning people buzz around to beautiful live music.         Tick tock, tick tock…  Read “I can’t wait to get to Fraaaaance !” If you’re ever passing by, make sure you have a snoop around, even if you’re not going anywhere. Don’t ever tell me inspiration doesn’t come free !   Finally on our way 🙂 xx Aimee

I love this jacket by Chattawak… It makes me want to buy a nice black jacket and sit there for hours adding on beads and sew-on studs… A quality project full of time, craftsmanship and love… But then I wonder, isn’t DIY supposed to be a cheaper option ? Would you buy supplies to make something that might as well cost you as much as the real thing ? Or is DIY a cheaper option only ? I don’t know… I would like to say it’s all about spending time doing it yourself, being proud of your own work and making something exactly the way you want it… But if I spend a lot of money on a nice, black jacket, am I going to want to customise it ? Hmm. Food for thoughts. What do you think ? xx Aimee Inspiration of the day spotted here.

Now here’s a good DIY idea ! Simple and yet super cute, this TNTees tee-shirt would be a great one to make yourself at home. Just find yourself some colourful rhinestones (check out this selection here) and sew / glue them around the neck of a contrasting tee… I like the pink but I’m really feeling a lemon yellow with bright stones… Or how about mint green with grassy stones… Hmm… Love it ! xx Aimee PS – Remember you can also use clear rhinestones and paint them with nail polish ! Ola ! I’m so pleased with my DIY Charlotte Olympia Kitty Flats posted yesterday that I can’t stop thinking about more ways to customise shoes ! Luxury flats are SOOOOOO expensive and yet I’m convinced you can get a great result and have lots of fun customising pairs of cheaper shoes at home. Here I selected shoes on Zalando.com and on Net-a-Porter.com. Some of them aren’t exactly the right shape but they’re pretty close and I’m sure the result would look great anyway. I hope to get time to do a couple of these pairs but I probably won’t be able to do them all so I hope you do ! Send me a pic if you have a go ! I think I’ll start with the cute Chloe ones first… Hope you’re inspired too ! xx Aimee

DIY Charlotte Olympia inspired Kitty Flats

It’s no longer a secret (I have been shouting it out on all my social media accounts !), last week I customised a pair of ballet flats to make my very own pair of Charlotte Olympia inspired pumps. Adorable and so much cheaper than the luxury pair sold on Net-a-porter for over 600$ ! I hesitated between doing the cats and the latest Marc Jacobs pups but after asking you guys to vote on Facebook and Instagram I soon realised the cats were still the most popular design, even though a few other DIYers have already posted theirs over the past few months. So – here’s my version ! Regarding the style of shoe I chose – I’m afraid I’m just not into slipper flats… They stil look too grandparenty for me even thought I have seen some stylish women pull them off pretty well. So to make sure I loved my kitties as much as I hoped, I went for a classic ballet flat in black. Better safe than sorry !  To make your own Charlotte Olympia inspired kitty flats, you will need : –       A pair of ballet flats in the size and colour of your choice (green, red, blue or white could look cute too !) –       A piece of leather or faux leather big enough to cut out four cute little ears –       Scissors to do so –       Fabric or jewellery glue to stick the leather ears to your shoes –       Fabric puffy paint in the colour of your choice (I stuck with the traditional pearly gold) –       A piece of chalk to avoid making unforgivable mistakes –       Four small green / blue / any other colour crystals for your cats eyes if you wish to add a little extra sparkle like I did Note : Before getting started, I removed the bows from the front of my flats. Step 1 : Cut out four triangles for your cats’ ears. Make them nice and pointy. Step 2 : Put glue on the edge of each triangle and stick them in place, just underneath the insde edge of your shoes. Hold each one in place for a minute or two, whilst the glue kicks in, and leave to dry for a few hours. Step 3 : Paint a triangle on each ear with your puffy glue. Step 4 : Draw your cats’ faces on with chalk. If you go wrong (which is  probably going to happen more than once unless you’re a cat-face-genius !), simply rub the fabric lightly or better more, use a damp cloth to remove the chalk. Leave to dry and start again. YES this may take a while to get it right but it’s better that than having lopsided-not-so-cute-after-all-weird-looking-cats on they end of your feet. Agreed ?! Step 5 : Once you are confident your cats look the way you want them to look, take a deep breath and paint away ! There are ways of making sure you get it right, like practicing on a piece of paper or loose fabric before starting on your shoes. Get used to the nib of your paint tube and to its fluidity which can vary from brand to brand and depending on how much paint is left. I advise trying to make swift movements when drawing your faces instead of drawing each line slowly. If you have the chalk there to show you what you have to do, just don’t think about it and go for it ! It will look much better if you have a self-confident line than a shaky line, if you see what I mean. Feel free to practice following random lines on a piece of paper too, until you feel you can get it just right on your shoes. WORSE CASE SCENARIO – KEEP CALM AND always have a cocktail stick nearby. If you go drastically wrong, you can always use the point of your cocktail stick to quickly scoop up the excess paint tiny bit by tiny bit, making sure you flick it up, away from your shoes instead of pushing it down into the fabric. You can paint your cats’ features in any order you like but my advice would be to start at the to and work your way down (even though you can tell from the above photos I didn’t do it this way around – naughty, naughty). If you work the other way, from bottom to top, there’s always a risk of your hand landing in the paint below the area you are working on and accidentally-smeared paint is not a good look.  Step 6 : If you would like to add extra twinkle to your kitty’s eyes, add a crystal in each one by simply sticking them in the wet fabric paint. Step 7 : When all is dry, remove excess chalk with a damp cloth. And voila ! You have cute little kitties on your toes ! Hope you like them ! See you tomorrow for more fun and very soon with new exciting DIYs – I have plans for you… Meow, Aimee PS – If you wish to join in the crafty fun and vote for my next DIY projects, follow me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter !
