DIY SPRAY PAINT TWIN CANVASES

every cloud has a silver lining

One of the beauties of handmade items is the time spent thinking out them and making them. Isn’t that why they make the most beautiful gifts in the world ? What’s better than a well chosen present ? A well chosen present someone you love (and who obviously loves you back !) has spent time to design and create ! That’s why, when times get hard, I like to cheer my friends and family up with something I’ve made for them – to say I’M THINKING OF YOU !

Now is one of those times and this DIY spray paint twin canvas design is what I came up with for the people in mind. It’s quick to make and has a modern street-arty feel as well as a positive message to read each time you look at it ! Love and support coming your way, people…!

Here’s a step by step tutorial with extra tips below – enjoy :)

DIY canvas

YOU WILL NEED :

- Two canvases of the same size

- Two cans of spray paint (one dark one and one silver one if you want to mirror the meaning of this sweet saying)

- Card

- Scissors

- Newspaper to protect the ground ! Please don’t do what I did which was decide to paint indoors, covering up the whole floor with newspaper… only to then walk on the painted paper and stamp it all around the flat :( I should know better !

1 : Fold a piece of cardboard in half and draw 1/2 a cloud on the fold. Cut out to make a perfectly symmetrical cloud and adjust if needed. Cut along the fold and put one half on the inside edge of each canvas. Make sure the cloud lines up when both canvases are side to side. This cardboard will make sure you have a fluffy white cloud when you finish the project – leave it there until the end (you can even use a small piece of folded masking tape on the back to keep it in place).

2 : Paint each canvas in a different colour. DO THIS OUTSIDE (says she…).

3 : Count how many of each letter you need and cut them out roughly. If you want to make it fast, fold some cardboard accordeon style and chop out the correct number of each letter in one go.

4 : When the first layer of paint is touch dry (20 – 30 min), lay out the letters in the correct order. I like to line the left canvas’s letter on the left side and vis versa on the right side.

5 : Paint back over each canvas with the contrasting colour. The letters have to stay put so that they protect the first layer of paint from the second.

PLEASE NOTE : IF ONE OF YOUR LETTERS HAPPENS TO MOVE OUT OF PLACE YOU DO NOT NEED TO JUMP OUT OF THE WINDOW ! ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS PAINT THAT SPOT WITH LAYER 1 AGAIN, WAIT FOR IT TO DRY, PLACE YOUR NAUGHTY LETTER BACK AND PAINT LAYER 2 WITH MORE SUCCESS !

6 : When it’s all dry you can remove your letters and admire your hard work ! Leave the canvases to dry an extra night before giving them or putting them up.

7 : BE HAPPY

  1. I like to put quotes on my mirrors. Currently, I have “Your smile is my sunshine! ”

The group Operation Beautiful always has great quotes, too.

    Great DIY!!!!

    • Aw that’s a cute quote :) I like the mirror idea ! I’ll check out Operation Beautiful right away….
